Sapa

Rice terraces and mountain villages in the far north

Sapa is a mountain town in Lao Cai province near the Chinese border, around 320 km north-west of Hanoi. It sits above the Muong Hoa valley, where rice terraces cascade down the hillsides, and is home to Hmong, Dao, Tay and other ethnic minority communities.

Most visitors come to trek between villages such as Lao Chai and Ta Van, stay in a homestay and, for some, ride the cable car up Fansipan, at 3,143 m the highest peak in Indochina. It is too far for a day trip — plan at least one night, ideally two or more.
