Karst cliffs and water at Tam Coc, Ninh Binh

Day trips from Hanoi

Limestone bays, karst valleys, cave pagodas and mountain terraces — how to choose, and how long each really takes.

Hanoi is the gateway to northern Vietnam’s great landscapes. Some make an easy day trip; others are much better with a night away. Here is how they compare — times are typical road times each way and vary with traffic.

Ninh Binh — the easiest great day trip

The closest of the big landscapes and the most rewarding in a day: row through the caves of Trang An or Tam Coc, visit the old capital Hoa Lu and climb Mua Cave for the view. If you can, stay a night in Tam Coc.

Ha Long Bay — better overnight

A Ha Long day cruise gives you four to five hours on the water after a long drive. An overnight cruise lets you see the bay at sunset and sunrise and is much more relaxed. For Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island, see our sister site CatBa.com.

Perfume Pagoda — pilgrimage scenery

The Perfume Pagoda combines a boat ride and a climb to a cave sanctuary. Lovely outside festival season; extremely crowded after Lunar New Year.

Craft villages — easy half days

Bat Trang for pottery, the incense and conical-hat villages for photographs, and Duong Lam for old laterite houses.

Sapa — not a day trip

Sapa is around 5–6 hours away. Allow at least one night, better two, with a trek and a homestay.

Tour or independent?

Tours include transport, tickets, boats and lunch and are often cheaper than arranging it yourself. Independent travel works well for Ninh Binh and Sapa by limousine van or bus — see getting around.

Plan your Hanoi days

Eat in the alleys, ride a Vespa, sail among the karsts

Taste pho, bun cha and egg coffee with a local guide, watch the water puppets, cross the city on the back of a Vespa — then spend a day among the limestone islands of Ha Long Bay or the rice fields of Ninh Binh. Compare the tours and book in a couple of taps.
